“Some express an emotion, visually through paint and brush on a canvas, Painting. Some carve out a feeling on a piece of rock, assign character and breathe life into it, Sculpture. Some strum strings, massage keys humming a melody of pain, loneliness, inspiration, hope, joy and love, Music. Some capture a flash fleeting moment along with all the feelings and emotions evoked at a particular moment in time, pause it and store it forever, Photography. I do all of the above in words and call it Poetry.” ~ Takwana Nhamo
“Once you have tasted flight,
you will forever walk the
earth with your eyes turned
skyward, for there you have
been, and there you will
always long to return.” ~ Leonardo da Vinci
Sometimes inspiration finds you, sometimes you go find it, sometimes it’s neither one of the above.
When inspiration is hard to come by whether in the active sense of looking for it or in the magical serendipitous instance of “it” finding you, I believe the best way to find a solution for this frustrating situation is to position yourself, mind, body and spirit in such a way that you become highly sensitive to any stimulus to subconsciously attract inspiration.
Step outside the norm, do things you don’t usually do, if you usually drive around take a bus or a train, try out a new flavour of chips, I recommend “Lays ~ Sour Cream and Onion” flavour, it is to die for. Listen to a new genre of music, visit an Art gallery, or a museum be a recycling bin of seemingly useless information, music, art, books, conversation or whatever. You will find that inspiration is in the most simple of things, places even, and realising that is the beauty and magic of it all.
So inspired by whatever, be it a song, a painting, a book, an article in a magazine, a beautiful big moon precariously hung on black velvet or a starry night or how something or someone makes you feel, the creative juice in you will effortlessly just flow, without putting much thought into it.
Keep in mind, Inspiration is Never on Schedule but Always on Time.
Through Life’s peaks and valleys, here is a piece by Max Ehrmann that always gives me a different perspective on the myriad situations I find myself in, it reminds me that life is beautiful. I hope it will also help you uplift and inspire your soul to see the beauty in life.
The Desiderata ~ Desired Things
“Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labours and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul. With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.’ ~ Max Ehrmann American Writer, Poet, and Attorney; September 26, 1872 – September 9, 1945
“Love is best defined by oneself. It is one force that strikes people differently, but feels the same to each and every one. Love has a mind of its own, its own point of view shared by two. It is finding perfection buried beneath imperfection. It is what remains after infatuation burns out, its life from the ashes, its cushion for hard times, its what remains when flaws and shortcomings are shed light on. Love is impractical, illogical, it is senseless yet it makes sense to pursue it regardless of all logic staked up against it. It is more than a word to be said, or even expressed because we will always fall short and misrepresent it. Love is ageless, timeless, it is forgiveness. Love is Beautiful. Love is Eternal.” ~ Takwana Nhamo, Content Creator, Poet, Marketer
Don’t be afraid.
To the blacks, browns, reds and yellows periwinkles teals and fuchsias, if you want to be in advertising, there is one thing to remember.
Don’t be afraid.
Of hard work, rejection, racism, responsibility, sexism.
Don’t be afraid of being the only one in the room.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, find answers.
Listen, Hear, Trust.
Don’t be afraid to follow.
Don’t be afraid to lead.
Don’t be afraid to learn, to grow, to mature, to change
Don’t be afraid to try, to fail, to try again, fail again, try again and fail again.
Love and greatness
“The pursuit of love and greatness is a noble, exhilarating, uncomfortable, courageous, foolish, extremely gratifying, journey. If you are willing to experience rejection, setbacks, embarrassment, humiliation, failure, ridicule, imbalance, loneliness, heartbreak, disappointment, more failure, make sacrifices, dare fate and laugh, there is a good chance you can have the loves of your life and almost everything else you desire.
Define love for yourself and apply it to everything you do. Define greatness for yourself and work towards it in every living moment. Remove the word “can’t” from your vocabulary and stop making excuses for anything. Only complain when things are too easy. Challenge yourself. Stay out of your comfort zone. Refuse to let lesser minds stifle your growth. Hunt your dreams. Run from mediocrity. Celebrate the uniqueness of you. Commit to this way of life and you will create a world unlike anything anyone ever told you was possible.
This is not about being great at branding, advertising, strategy, interactive or any of the other communication arts. This is about being great at living.” ~ Charles Hall Creative Director, Copywriter, Writer, Filmmaker, Artist, Teacher, Coach.
