“Some express an emotion, visually through paint and brush on a canvas, Painting. Some carve out a feeling on a piece of rock, assign character and breathe life into it, Sculpture. Some strum strings, massage keys humming a melody of pain, loneliness, inspiration, hope, joy and love, Music. Some capture a flash fleeting moment along with all the feelings and emotions evoked at a particular moment in time, pause it and store it forever, Photography. I do all of the above in words and call it Poetry.” ~ Takwana Nhamo
Sometimes inspiration finds you, sometimes you go find it, sometimes it’s neither one of the above.
When inspiration is hard to come by whether in the active sense of looking for it or in the magical serendipitous instance of “it” finding you, I believe the best way to find a solution for this frustrating situation is to position yourself, mind, body and spirit in such a way that you become highly sensitive to any stimulus to subconsciously attract inspiration.
Step outside the norm, do things you don’t usually do, if you usually drive around take a bus or a train, try out a new flavour of chips, I recommend “Lays ~ Sour Cream and Onion” flavour, it is to die for. Listen to a new genre of music, visit an Art gallery, or a museum be a recycling bin of seemingly useless information, music, art, books, conversation or whatever. You will find that inspiration is in the most simple of things, places even, and realising that is the beauty and magic of it all.
So inspired by whatever, be it a song, a painting, a book, an article in a magazine, a beautiful big moon precariously hung on black velvet or a starry night or how something or someone makes you feel, the creative juice in you will effortlessly just flow, without putting much thought into it.
Keep in mind, Inspiration is Never on Schedule but Always on Time.
Don’t be afraid.
To the blacks, browns, reds and yellows periwinkles teals and fuchsias, if you want to be in advertising, there is one thing to remember.
Don’t be afraid.
Of hard work, rejection, racism, responsibility, sexism.
Don’t be afraid of being the only one in the room.
Don’t be afraid to ask questions, find answers.
Listen, Hear, Trust.
Don’t be afraid to follow.
Don’t be afraid to lead.
Don’t be afraid to learn, to grow, to mature, to change
Don’t be afraid to try, to fail, to try again, fail again, try again and fail again.
